Alwin Schroeder (1855–1928) was born into a family of musicians and was an instructor at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Leipzig, Germany, before joining the Boston Symphony Orchestra. From 1891 to 1907 he performed with the Boston-based Kneisel Quartet, the United States' leading string quartet of that era.
