It gives us an immense pleasure to bring out the text book, “A Textbook on Introduction to Sericulture and Soil Science” for B. Sc I semester students according to the syllabus of Jammu University. The treatise in hand is the outcome of our feelings that there is a need of comprehensive, compact and up-to-date book on this subject. The book is written according to the latest syllabus of B. Sc I semester of Jammu University. Presentation of subject matter is in systematic, simple and rich style in the form of headings. Figures given in the book are up-to-date and have been taken from authentic sources.

We acknowledge our thanks to all those writers whose works have been consulted and quoted in this book. We express our deep sense of gratitude to our students, friends, relatives and colleagues who encouraged us for writing this book. We do not want to weaken the bond of love by merely mentioning their names. The authors will feel amply rewarded if this enlarged and revised edition of book proves more useful to the students and teachers. Suggestions for further improvement of the book will be gratefully acknowledged. The special feature of this book includes comprehensive text, written in a simple and easy understandable language, elaborate tables and figures.

Science progresses with wide open disclosure and debate, not with confidential notes or communications to forgettable forums, and certainly not with patented tradecrafts. It is a reality that students at the undergraduate level of sericulture do not have a text book dealing in a concise and simple way. In compiling this book we have tried our level best to reflect the contemporary outlook on the subjects limiting ourselves within the framework of the prescribed syllabi of Jammu University. All the chapters of the book form a comprehensive, “Introduction to Sericulture and Soil Sciences” particularly prescribed for B. Sc I semester students according to the syllabus of Jammu University. This book is designed to serve in Sericulture or its allied branches and provides a bridge gap in the literature considerably felt by various agencies to make it available to Indian students, teachers, scientists and sericulturists for a more meaningful exercise in the field of research directed at improvement in production and productivity.
