Jagdish Chand Ajmani was born in Shimla and educated at St. Stephen's College, Delhi and Brasenose College, Oxford. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1952. During a career that spanned thirty-six years, he served as Ambassador to Germany, Italy, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay and as High Commissioner to Australia. He is also the former dean of the Foreign Service (Training) Institute. Since 1994, he has been working as an advisor to the Child Education Society, Delhi, the apex body of nineteen educational institutions with a student enrolment of over 27,000.
