It straddled pre-and postindependence India in a way no other did. It was also the generation that helped build post-Independence India. This is the biography of one man from that era, Baloo Lal Panagariya. Born in a remote Rajasthani village where education was a rarity, he managed to study enough to embark on a career in the princely state of Mewar. Despite losing his parents before turning eighteen, he went on to serve on the editorial board of Lokvani, the only newspaper in Jaipur at the time, finally retiring as deputy secretary in the Rajasthan government. And, many years later, two of his sons were honoured with Padma awards by the President of India. This book showcases the role of ordinary citizens in laying the foundation of present-day India and is an enchanting portrayal of life pre-and post-Independence.
