The course 'Pedagogy of English' is an endeavor to develop an understanding of the nature of English Language and the importance of teaching of English. The course comprises of two modules- MODULE 1: Fundamentals of English Language and Language transaction and MODULE 2: Bases of Language Learning and Assessment. Unit 1 discusses the basics of academic disciplines which includes : (a) Meaning of academic disciplines, Relationship between academic disciplines and English. (b) Classification of academic discipline: Becher-Biglan typology(pure -hand , pure - soft, applied-hard, applied- soft types) and (c) Place of English in the present school curriculum. Unit 2 deals with the role of English Language which includes nature of language, language and society - importance of English language English language in day-to day life, language and school and also touches the concept and types of language resisters and role of English language in a multilingual classroom. Unit 3 focuses on pedagogical approaches and techniques described constructivist approach (7Es), communicative approach (concept and procedure), inductive-deductive approach and techniques of teaching - expository (narration, dramatization and concept mapping) and interactive techniques (discussion, questioning and brainstorming) also ways of appreciation of poems. This module comprises Unit 4, 5 and 6 which sheds light on pedagogical bases and professional development of teacher, learning resources and assessment in language.
