This edition features several new clinical photographs, radiographs, and other images while the explanatory diagrams have been redrawn. For the first time, the print work will also be available as an ebook, as well as available online at www.emedicine360.com. As before, there is a liberal use of color. It is our plan to produce a companion volume the next year that will incorporate the past, present, and some additional Case Studies since many readers have told us that they enjoy these illustrative examples of the real patient cases. The book is designed to appeal to surgical trainees as well as those in independent practice. The initial chapters on core principles, critical care and trauma are followed by the major components of general surgery: gastrointestinal, vascular, breast, endocrine and transplantation. The book ends with a more limited coverage of those allied surgical specialties – pediatric, head and neck, genitourinary, skin and soft tissue, cardiothoracic – that from time to time will be relevant to those caring for patients in a “general” surgical ward or clinic.
