Criminology is a subject which addresses students of undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the universities, institutes of sociology, criminology, law and social work and the law enforcement officers trained at police, judicial and correctional academies. This book Criminology, Penology and Victimology is meant to cater to the requirements of both students of criminology and the practitioners in law enforcement and correctional services. The Chapter-1 goes on to discuss the history, nature, subject matter, importance and the inter-disciplinary concerns of criminology. The etiology of crime has been succinctly analyzed in Chapter-7. The themes relating to individual deviance and collective deviance have been dealt under Chapter 8 and 9 respectively. Organized crime, white collar crime and recidivism have been discussed in separate Chapters from 10-12. Crime trends pertaining to some old and some new crime problems like gambling, prostitution, drug addiction, alcoholism and cyber crime have been well dealt under Chapters 13 to 18. Concepts of penology, prison system, prison conditions and prison reforms have been covered under Chapters 19-20, Chapters 21 to 23 are devoted towards the discussion of theories of penology pertaining to deterrence, retribution, restoration, reformation, rehabilitation, probation and parole. Chapter-24 discusses the much needed concept of social defense and the approaches to the promotion of social defense. The last two Chapters are devoted to the discussion of often neglected area in the textbooks such as victimology (Chapter-25) and victims of terrorism (Chapter-26).
