He has been credited with creating the genres of horror, speculative fiction and adventure for children in modern Bengali fiction. His characters, Bimal-Kumar (the adventurers) and Jayanta-Manik (the detectives) appeared in numerous stories and continue to be wildly popular. Hemenbabu was also a choreographer, a competent player of the esraj who regularly performed at the Star Theatre in Calcutta and the editor of a theatre and film magazine called Naachghar.
