Vincenzo Sorrentino is an internationally recognized scholar in molecular cell biology and genetics, particularly focusing on skeletal muscle cells. He earned his M.D. in 1980 from the Faculty of Medicine in Rome, Italy. Between 1983 and 1987, he conducted postdoctoral research at the National Cancer Institute (NIH) in Bethesda and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, investigating oncogenes and growth factors in neoplastic transformation. In 1988, he joined the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg as a staff scientist. By 1994, he became the Director of the "Factors of Growth and Intracellular Signaling unit at DIBIT, San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan, and served as a Professor of Histology at the University of Siena.
