Therefore, an effort has been made to provide the students with knowledge of basic physiological principles and chemical concepts required in understanding and interpretation of medicinal chemistry. It is with these objectives in mind that the subject matter has been designed to make it an effective text book for students and also serve as a resource book. The content of the book has been divided in four sections. Section A comprises topics of theoretical and general importance which have been arranged in the form of five chapters as: Introduction; chemical structure and Biological activity, receptor theories, transport and metabolism of drugs. These topics have been dealt in a systematic manner incorporating latest ideas so as to provide a clear correlation on the subject matter. Section B has been titled in the form of Pharmacodynamic agents and covers a very wide range of classes of drugs. These include agents which affect central nervous system; cardiovascular system, diuretics, cholinergic and adrenergic drugs, antiallergic compounds, antispasmadic and antiulcer drugs and lastly drugs which elicit G I symptoms. Section C has been designated as Chemotherapeutic agents and includes topics like sulphar drugs, antibiotics, antimalarial compounds, antihclmintics, antitubercular drugs, anticancer and antiviral compounds.
