The main purpose of this book is to update the students of Arts, Science, Commerce and Management at their B.A., B.Sc., BCA, B.Com. and BBM, degree level to get a clear and comprehensive picture of the compulsory paper on `Environmental Studies`. `The subject being comparatively new and dynamic, there is a need for constant revision to include latest happenings of events in the field of environment. The world is no longer a healthy place as it was a couple of centuries ago; overexploitation of natural resources, population explosion and the pressures of urbanization have increased alarmingly the level of pollution, the extent of deforestation, degradation of environment and the loss of biodiversity. The authorities, scientists, environmentalists and the public at large have a greater responsibility to act now and try to restore normal living conditions so that they leave behind a healthy and safe planet for the future generations. Steps have to be taken to protect the environment from further degradation. Presently, there are many agencies involved in water supply in India and each agency has its own laboratory test practices. In view of the demand for a comprehensive manual by various water quality testing laboratories at Central, State, District, Block and Gram Panchayat levels, effort has been made to prepare a technical manual for water and wastewater analysis which can cater to the needs of various laboratories. The main objective of this manual is to ensure quality control in water testing laboratories. This manual includes the methods for physico-chemical, microbiological, and biological parameters which can be practiced in all the laboratories. Due emphasis has been given in this manual to basic requirements in water testing laboratory and sampling procedures which are important factors for water and wastewater testing. More than one analytical method has been described for the testing of physico-chemical parameters. Appropriate analytical method can be adopted by the concerned water testing laboratory depending on the equipment/ instrument availability.
