A gas turbine also called a combustion turbine is a type of internal combustion engine. It has an upstream rotating compressor coupled to a downstream turbine and a combustion chamber in between. The basic operation of the gas turbine is similar to that of the steam power plant except that air is used instead of water.

Compared to a piston the gas turbine has less parts and the moving parts rotate in only one direction without stopping and accelerating as the pistons normally do in an engine. Thus a running gas turbine is basically free of the vibrations normally found in piston models which translates in much longer service life (TBO) and higher reliability.

Gas turbine offer even greater benefits in the aviation arena. Turbojet and multirotor turbofan engines have no competition for powering larger aircrafts at faster speeds. Applications in other fields abound. An outstanding example is the aeroderivative gas turbines on offshore oil platforms where their lighter weight smaller footprint and ability to burn many different types of fuel make it a clear choice.

This book is written to meet the needs of students in engineering colleges and practicing engineers. The material has been specifically tailored for college undergraduate and graduate level design engineering of rotating machine courses. In keeping with its mostly introductory nature the primary focus is on thermodynamic cycle design and practical mechanical design features.
