“Nutrition is the provision to cells and organisms of the necessary substances to support life. Crops require a balanced diet of essential nutrients throughout their growth cycle. Many plant foods can be found in the soil but often in insufficient quantities to sustain high crop yields. Soil and climatic conditions can also limit a plant’s uptake of nutrients at key growth stages. The macronutrients are consumed in larger quantities and are present in plant tissue in quantities from 0.2% to 4.0%. Micro nutrients are present in plant tissue in quantities measured in parts per million ranging from 5 to 200 ppm. Most soil conditions across the world can provide plants with adequate nutrition and do not require fertiliser for a complete life cycle.
However man can artificially modify soil through the addition of fertiliser to promote vigorous growth and increase yield. The plants are able to obtain their required nutrients from the fertiliser added to the soil.
This book is of great value to growers agricultural consultants agronomists and plant scientists as it provides a practical easyto use reference for determining monitoring and improving the nutritional needs of plants. The graphical presentations of plant interactions with nutrients and beneficial elements and the straight forward explanations of how nutrient deficiencies arise are especially useful to those seeking knowledge of plant nutrition. “
