Mary Shelley was born on 30 August 1797 in London. She married poet Percy Bysshe Shelley in 1816. Frankenstein was published in 1818 and it immediately became a bestseller. The work continues to remain a benchmark in the horror genre. Valperga (1823), The Last Man (1826) and Lodore (1835) are some of her other works.
Frankenstein is the story of an eccentric scientist Victor Frankenstein and his creation. Victor undertakes an unconventional experiment, succeeds in creating a living being but with horrifying results. Written by Mary Shelley when she was young, this story is the first science-fiction novel to achieve cult status and is a bone-chilling read.
