Friedrich Max Muller (1823-1900) was a great linguist and Oriental scholar born in Germany. His translation of the Hitopadesha was published in Leipzig in 1847, resulting in the publication of six volumes on the subject. He also translated Kalidasa's Meghaduta. His list of publications includes the History of Ancient Sanskrit Literature, Introduction to The Science of Mythology and Auld Lang Syne.

A collection of the lectures of Max Muller, India: What it Can Teach Us portrays India, especially Vedic India, as an epitome of virtue and morality, whose glory is equal to classical Greek and Roman thought. Muller, in these essays, urges the West to abandon their superior colonial mind-set to adopt the multi-dimensional efficacy that is inherent to Indian culture.
