Apurva Narain was born in Calcutta in 1967 and grew up in Lucknow and Delhi. He studied at St. Stephen's College and IIM, as well as the University of Cambridge. A former corporate consultant with Price Waterhouse, he now works in ecology-development, has edited a journal and has research interests in the philosophy of ecological economics. Literature has always been an abiding passion. Based in Delhi, he divides his time among India, England and France.

Yet numbers reveal only a part of the truth. Beyond statistics, there are stories, often unreported of women in Damoh, Madhya Pradesh, who are routinely raped if they spurn the advances of men of girls from de-notified tribes in central India who have no recourse to justice if sexually violated of victimized lower-caste girls in small-town Baduan, Uttar Pradesh. There are also stories of custodial rape, non-consensual incest and trafficking.
