The sheep is a quadrupedal ruminant mammal typically kept as livestock. Like all ruminants sheep are members of the order Artiodactyl the eventoed ungulates. Although the name “sheep” applies to many species in the genus Ovis in everyday usage it almost always refers to Ovis Aries. Numbering a little over one billion domestic sheep are also the most numerous species of sheep. An adult female sheep is referred to as a ewe an intact male as a ram or occasionally a tup a castrated male as a wet her and a younger sheep as a lamb. Worldwide sheep and goat numbers have been increasing steadily over the past twenty years unlike most other livestock species used by man.

The most important product we get from sheep is meat. Meat is an important component of our diets. Lamb and mutton supply us with many of the vital vitamins and proteins we need for healthy living.

The main aim of this book has been to present a comprehensive piece of information on various aspects of sheep farming and wool production. The book is intended primarily as a text book for students majoring in sheep production and breeding in animal science college/departments of various universities and for research and development workers as a reference.
