The existing literature on human trafficking is based (almost exclusively) on the United Nations Trafficking in Persons Protocol, 2000. However, detailed historical analysis of the preceding law on the subject is limited. Without reference to the origin and drafting history of the earlier treaties, the development of public international law to its present stage, the key areas in which that development occurred, and the pace at which it happened cannot be fully understood.
