<p>This book is the record of a journey which the author embarked in 1936 from Punjab to Kabul. It was a time of great political ferment. The political climate of the region had changed since the time when Alexander Burns had travelled here for the British. Dost Mohammad of Afghanistan and Ranjit Singh of Punjab were trying to play each other to gain further influence in that region. Crossing the plains of the Punjab the territory of Waziriristan and the plains of the Suleiman Kul Vigne reached Ghazni and then proceeded to Kabul via Killah and Maidan. All along the way he kept notes of all that he saw heard and experienced. It contains descriptions of the landscape snippets of the local history the habits customs and rituals of the people the descriptions of courts political intrigues and skirmishes etc. This book was first published in 1840. About the Author G.T. Vigne (1801-63) was an amateur cricketer and traveller. Left England for Persia in 1831 and then travelled to India and spent the next seven years travelling to north-west India and Central Asia . He was the first to describe Nanga Parbat. In 1936 he visited Afghanistan the first Englishman to have visited Kabul and met the emir Dost Mohammad.</p>

About the Author Colonel G.B. Maleson (1825-98) was an English officer in India. His last appointment was that of guardian to the young Maharaja of Mysore. He retired with the rank of colonel in 1877. A prolific writer his important works include the famous Red Pamphlet published from Calcutta in 1857 when the Sepoy Mutiny was at its height. He also rewrote the History of Indian Mutiny (1857-8) which was begun but left unfinished by Sir John Kaye and the most valuable History of the French in India (1893) and The Decisive Battles of India (1888).</p>

From here she travelled extensively to the caves of Carli the rock cut Elephanta Caves Salsette and Poona and from Bombay she went on to Ceylon where she went from Point de Galle to as far as Negombo and then Trincomalee before returning to India at Madras from where she went to Calcutta before heading back for England in 1811. The style of narration in the writer's own words is that of an ‘observant stranger’. She described vividly the customs topography the bazaars art mythology and other glimpses of the places she visited. <p>V. Ball a renowned geologist toured extensively through the remotest parts of India between the years 1864 and 1878. His journies took him through Bengal Bihar Orissa Central and Western India Kumaon Baluchistan and Afghanistan and the Andaman and Nicobar islands in the Bay of Bengal. He spent days and months amongst the villagers and tribals to familiarize himself with their way of life and surroundings. It was out of these field studies that the work emerged in its present form. The author has given a vivid account of the various races castes and tribes he came in contact with during his journies notably the Santhals Kols Uraons Karens Serakas and Bhumizs etc. Here are descriptive accounts of their customs and beliefs religions and festivals caste structure crime social behaviour and attitudes methods of cultivation agricultural imple­ments and economic conditions. In addition to issues related to peasant and tribal life the author has also taken into account the lives of coalminers labourers village officials rural elite and the police as well as life in the jungles of India. The book also covers many other subjects like Geology Botany and Fauna etc. It is a most lively descriptive and analytical account written by any scholar on the life in nineteenth century India. It will be a valued possession for the students and scholars of anthropology sociology history economics and geology. About the Author V. Ball a renowned naturalist was associated with the Geological Survey of India. He was a fellow of the Calcutta University and of Geological Societies of London and Ireland. He was also a member of the Asiatic Society of Bengal The Zoological and Botanical Society of Vienna and the British Ornithologists Union. He contributed papers to the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal and is the author of The Diamonds Coal and Gold in India: Their Mode of Occurrence and Distribution London 1881; and A Manual of Geology of India Calcutta 1881.</p>

This is an English translation from the Dutch. About the Author Chistopher Fryke had a varied and adventurous career. Though he was a surgeon his chief desire was to travel and see strange countries for which he came to Amsterdam in the hope of undertaking some voyage to the East Indies as a surgeon. He served as a surgeon in the Ternate and later Europa in the course of which he contrived to visit every centre of Dutch trade in Asia. Christopher Schweitzer of Wurtenberg in Germany being keen on voyages volunteered for the Dutch East India Company's service as a steward to later obtain promotion and a wide variety of employment. He was later made Secretary or Overseer of the clerks at the East India House. Here he remained till the expiration of his contract.</p>
